Latin Women’s Initiative
Latin Women’s Initiative, former Mexican Women’s Initiative, is a non-profit organization founded in 1997 by former
Consul of Mexico’s wife Almendra Perez Cardenas, Cecilia de la Rosa and Leticia Fallick. These three ladies
recognized the potential of organizing Latin American women to help those less fortunate families within our
community and they teamed up to help build and grow the organization. The mission of LWI is to Serve and Empower
the Latino Community. The vision is to bridge communication and exchange experiences as well as enhancing the
cultural and educational environment of our communities’ women and their families.
LWI gives both financial and volunteer to support to several local organizations such as La Rosa Family Services,
Prepared 4 Life, Denver Harbor Clinic, YES school, I Have a Dream – Houston, Mexican Institute, University of
Houston Mexican American Studies.
We are growing every year, this year being the most significant of all. Last year, we had the vision to begin our
volunteer program and open our horizons by opening the organization to membership.
Today, we have 300 paid members and we are sure that at our 2006 luncheon at the Junior League, we will have 500
members. (This is a dramatical increase, since last there were 10 paid members in 2005)
The fashion show that LWI puts on is truly one of its kind! Shelby Hodges, describes it as the luncheon of the year,
you certainly see all the “socialites” in the Houston scene and the Latino Community.
Unfortunately, we cannot survive by only having a fashion show, so we have began actively looking for partnership
with organizations that believe in our initiative, to help our women and children in the Latino community get
educated and live a better tomorrow.
We are proud to say that in just 4 years, we have given over $150,000.00 back to the community; we expect to triple
this number in the next five years!
